Increase in the Number of Candidates for the GATE exam

Last updated on 24-May-2013

The GATE (Graduate Aptitude test in Engineering) is the exam which is meant for taking admission into the research and M. Tech programs of the Indian Institute of Science based at Bangalore. The GATE entrance is also required for getting admission into the IITs. In the recent examination which was conducted on the 12th February, 2012 had seen an increase of candidates by 80%. The major increase was for Indian Institute of Technology  Madrass especially from the states like Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala.

The main rationale behind the increase in the number of candidates is that there are more and more students who wish to study further in research. There are many aspirants who want to join the Public Sector Units like IOC and BHEL. Both these units have declared that they shall be recruiting students who would have cleared the GATE entrance exams. IIT Madras has enrolled nearly 900 students for their M. Tech course and almost 450 students for their Ph. D. The committee which has been set specifically which focuses on increasing the requirement of research has fixed target of 10,000 Ph. D. students every year.

The other reason for increase in the applicants is that the public sector units like HAL, BHEL. IOC, ONGC, NTPC, SAIL etc. have criteria that they prefer students who have good scores in the GATE entrance exam.
